Susan is a remarkable person. She is a "death doula", and she is also one of the smiliest, happiest people I've ever met. She is radiant and warm and comforting, and so I was DELIGHTED to work with her on a piece to honor her dad.
He used to recite a poem to her:
"Pause Youth
as You go by
where You are now
once was I
where I am now
You will be
Prepare Yourself
to follow Me"
She wanted this on a tombstone shaped pendant, with a New England inspired skull-with-wings head on top.
We based the original idea on a series of tombstone pendants I'd made years ago, but this piece was elongated to add the quote.
We went back and forth over many different font styles until we found one we both felt read like it had be carved into the stone of an ancient tomb
At the bottom a decorative wire mimics a wrought iron fence, with flowers pushing up around the base. The back of the piece was given a rough texture, further carrying the theme of the tombstone.
It was such an honor to work with Susan on this incredibly special Memento Mori pendant.
