Ian contacted me, interested in a piece of jewelry celebrating a favorite novel of his, Moby Dick.
He had a sketch he'd drawn with the basic concept, and I went from there, starting first with my own paper prototypes, and then on to the metal.
Throughout the process, Ian and I communicated back and forth. He was able to weigh in on different design decisions, such as the scale of the piece, the metals to use, the tilt of the boat, the position and shape of the water lines, the finish on the metal and the length of the chain.
I added the little surprise of great white whale diving back down on the back of the piece, along with my logo.
This piece was SO much fun to make.
Ian said of this whale of a pendant:
"It is an action piece, presenting a sense of foreboding or inevitability (if giving in), and for me a reminder that we all struggle with our demons."
