"Where flowers bloom, so does hope"
— Lady Bird Johnson

On my run this morning, it started snowing.
My emotional state has been even more impacted by the weather, and the cold, dreary, (snowy!) days don't do much to improve the mood. But I'm JUST beginning to see crocus emerge, the daffodils and hyacinth buds are beginning to come up and my goodness, I find hope in that.
I find hope in the sun, in the blue sky, in the birds chirping and eating at the feeder, unperturbed by the pandemic.
I don't want to say all the things you've already heard. All the platitudes about “these trying times.” We already know —
Sh*t is effed up right now.
I've been trying to think of how I can help. I can't sew (though my mom can, and has made hundreds of cloth masks thus far). I'm not much of a baker, even if I could find the yeast to make bread. I can't donate blood because I lived in Europe in the 90's (Exposure to BSE-mad cow disease).
It got me thinking about what has helped me the most since being home-bound: being outside in the sun. Going for runs with my dogs and filling my lungs with sweet oxygen. Listening to my husband's breath and feeling his chest rise and fall as he sleeps next to me. Reading stories about the beauty of humanity in times of crisis. Finding poems and phrases that spark optimism. And working, at half-speed and ever so slowly, on these little blooms of hope.
So I thought, maybe sharing something pretty, with an uplifting message. Maybe that's something helpful?
Each week, a new bloom. A different message. Words to comfort and encourage; reminders to breathe, and to appreciate each and every moment.
I hope these flowers give you a little boost. I want you to see something pretty, to read something positive. Maybe the quote will become your mantra for the week.
At the end of all of this, I'll have created a garden.
The first bloom: a sterling flower etched with the encouraging words of “Lady Bird” Johnson.
“Where flowers bloom, so does hope.”
Sterling silver etched with hope. Each petal hand cut and textured. In the center lies the most colorful, dreamy faceted opal — you could get a little lost in its depths.
You can watch it bloom here!
Stay healthy. Stay home.
xoxo
