I've always been fascinated by specimen boxes. Being able to see an exotic or colorful bug like a moth, really having the opportunity to study it, see it's fuzzy thorax and feathery antennae and the way the wings attach to the body- it's just so cool. I delight in visiting a natural history museum and seeing rows of exotic bugs and butterflies and moths, pinned in a little box with their latin names-it's one of the most engaging parts of science!
I've taken that fascination with these specimen boxes and made a sterling silver and brass version! Etched brass butterfly set in a sterling frame with a brass tag identifying the specimen as Danaus plexxipus, the monarch butterfly.
