132 days ago I started meditating. It’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself, and perhaps the best habit I have, beyond brushing my teeth every day. (And flossing. But I don’t do that every day, despite what I tell my dentist)
As I’ve integrated this daily practice, I’ve played with a few different mantras, until I landed on my favorite one:
“I am the sky”
Have you ever laid on your back in a field and gazed up at a crystal clear blue sky. Perhaps as you lay there, you see clouds in fluffy shapes reminiscent of bunnies, ice cream cones, whimsical dragons or cotton candy…
This mantra is a reminder that my consciousness is that vast and limitless. As expansive as a clear blue sky. And the clouds, be they fluffy and friendly, or grey and forboding- they pass. They’re just weather.
Clouds are stand ins for stressors, frustrations, thoughts and feelings. I tend to get stuck in those, but this mantra reminds me to witness them, accept them as transitory, and allow them to pass. You are not your thoughts.
In the words of Pema Chödrön. “You are the sky. Everything else, it’s just the weather.”
